In 19th century China a woman’s eligibility is judged by the size and shape of her feet. Women underwent the painful process of foot binding and lived in almost complete seclusion.

Lily, the daughter of a humble farmer, receives delighting new that if her feet where to be bound they will be flawless. Lily has now the chance to make a good marriage and support her family. She begins to undergo the anguish of foot binding, learns the language of ni shu (women’s writing) and makes a very special friend, Snow Flower.
