Author: Emma Donoghue Books ISBN: 9781445018737 A 3.4m square meter Room is five year old Jack’s entire world. It is where he lives with his mother and sometimes Old Nick when he visits. But mom makes him sleep in the closet and hide away...
Room is a uniquely told story of Jack, a little 5 year old boy and his mother’s day to day life in Room which is a 11 by 11 foot. With Jack being the narrator you only get information of Ma and Jacks situation as he understands what is going on. Jack has lived his whole life in Room and knows nothing else, the outside world is not real, Rug, Bed and each item in Room are his friends and all he knows.
Ma tries to make each day educational with activities for Jack and herself which is also a means of coping with her daily torment of being captured. Room is more than a victim and survivor story, it demonstrates child development under extreme circumstances, shows the power of language and storytelling and the power of a mother’s love and protection. Room captures you from the very first page but one can get tired of the first person narrative by Jack. It is a quick read that horrify you, makes you laugh, cry and is ultimately a fulfilling story.
Strengths: Unique, intriguing story that captures you from the very first page.
Weaknesses: Can get tired of the first person narrative by Jack.
