This is my third time trying to read this book from start to finish and I almost put it away again but this time I forced myself to read on.
The prologue had me intrigued and wanting to read on to find out who this woman was that sold all her husband’s cloths and belongings who simply walked away. But by chapter five I am still not the wiser but I can make a reasonable guess.
The sudden appearance of Mia was badly written for me, there is little background information about her. When she is introduced it is a bit strange for me that Allie simply takes this stranger into her home without knowing much about her.
Cam and I did not gel from the beginning of the book, here he has a devoted wife and he can’t even share his (not so horrible or serious) secret with his wife of his dreams to travel. He regards Allie as weak and caged in the small town, wanting so little in life. I think she is a strong woman loving her husband selflessly with all she has to give and he does not even notice all the little daily thing she does for him.
Then there is Jamie that will do anything in the name of love for his wife even kill.
Spoiler alert!
The first part of the book that left a sour taste in my mouth was when Cam came home and Mia was on the couch, seeing her then rushing up to his wife and making love to her while thinking of Mia. That showed me that trouble was beginning. I see Cam as a very week character, he barely knows this woman he has seen her twice and already fantasises about making love to her while he is with his wife. With no hesitation Cam simply jumps down the slope of infidelity driven by pure lust. This is defiantly one of my least favourite Jodi Picoult books. I did not enjoy the flash backs to Scotland and the way in which the whole story unfolds. I am truly disappointed in this book.
Strengths: It has a captivating prologue.
Weaknesses: Disliked Cam and the Scottish flash backs.
