About National Braai Day

Heritage Day, 24th of September, is celebrated by all South Africans by remembering the rich cultural heritage of the diverse cultures that makes up the rainbow nation of South Africa.

Heritage Day was “re-branded” in 2005 by a media campaign to National Braai Day, in recognition of the cultural tradition of all South Africans from many ethnic backgrounds, by getting friends together for a braai. Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu was appointed as patron of National Braai Day (Braai4Heratige) on the 5th of September 2007. At the end of 2007 the name was changes again to Braai4Heritage with the endorsement of South Africa’s National Heritage Council (NHC).

The idea behind National Braai Day is to get South Africans to partake in a fun and physical activity shared and loved by all.
