About the Ipod Touch

The iPod Touch also called the iTouch is a portable media player, personal digital assistant, handheld game console, and Wi-Fi mobile device which is designed and manufactured by Apple. The iPod Touch consists out of the multi-touch user interface of apple which is the first in the iPod line. It is also the first iPod with wireless access to the iTunes Store where music can be downloaded and Apple App Store so that customers can download and purchase content directly on the iPod Touch.

The iPod Touch operates on iOS with many different updated versions released since 2008 till the latest iOS 5.0 which was released on the 12th of October 2011. Many of the updated iOS operating systems were given to iPhone users for free while iPod Touch users had to purchase the update. In June 2010 Steve Jobs announced that free OS upgrades will be made available to iPod Touch users. Apple has sold over 60 million iPod Touch devices since March 2011.

iPod Touch compared to the iPhone

Although the iPod Touch and the iPhone run on the same iOS operating system the iPod Touch does not have some of the features and apps available to the iPhone. The older iPod Touch models also do not have speakers and cameras. The iPod Touch is also slimmer and lighter than the iPhone due to in not having GPS and cellular components. The iPod Touch was revered to as the “training wheels for the iPhone” by Steve Jobs.

iPod Touch generations

So far Apple has designed 4 different generation iPod Touches. The 1st generation iPod Touch 8GB was released on the 5th of September 2007 and was the first iPod with Wi-Fi and Multi-Touch interface. Later in February 2008 the 16GB and 32GB was added.

The 2nd generation iPod Touch was launched on the 9th of September 2008 had many additional features such as a new tapered chrome back with Nike+, a built in speaker added and volume buttons. The processor in the iPod Touch 2nd generation runs faster than the processor in the iPhone 3G. The iPod touch 2nd generation was release in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB.

The iPod Touch 3rd generation with new added features and updated operating systems was released on September the 9th 2009. The new features include upgraded Ram, Voice control support, upgraded CPU and GPU internals. The iPod Touch 3G design looks identical to the iPod Touch 2nd generation when view from the front but slight changes such as the speaker placement and the sleep/wake button.

The iPod Touch 4th generation was launched on the 1st of September 2010 with a front facing camera for the popular Face Time, support for recording video and photos via a back camera and a built in microphone. The design has also undergone significant changes such as the blank display which is significantly darker due to the higher pixel density that darkens the reflection. On October the 12th 2011 the new colour option of white was launched.
